VISITING THE WARNER TEXTILE ARCHIVE & GALLERY

Children studying fabric from the Archive
Children studying fabric from the Archive.

This nationally important archive offers endless educational possibilities for all age groups and abilities. All that is required is curiosity and imagination!

The archive’s collection includes fabric and costume from around the world as well as fabric produced by Warner and Sons. Many of the country’s leading designers and major artists were commissioned by Warner to produce fabric designs for palaces, stately homes, liners, hotels as well as ordinary homes. The archive has an extensive collection of original artwork that can be used to inspire and stimulate children’s creativity.

FACILITIES AT THE ARCHIVE:

  • Toilets.
  • Parking for coaches, mini buses and cars.
  • Hearing loop.
  • Gallery and Archive store on same level
Please note: we can not provide anywhere for you to eat packed lunches.

Please book your visit in advance. We are very happy to help you plan your visit and discuss the areas/themes that you would like to study.

STUDY VISIT:

The archive team are happy to arrange a study session for you. This can be just a handling session and looking at fabrics in general or a more in depth project working in the Gallery and the archive store. We can also arrange for the children to meet a textile artist and/or a fabric designer, and study a specific part of the archive e.g.: late 20th century designs, floral designs, non-European textiles etc.

GENERAL VISIT:
You are very welcome to make an appointment to look round the gallery without input from a member of the Warner Textile Archive team. If you wish we can devise a work sheet for you. Please book your visit in advance to avoid visiting the gallery at the same time as another school.

Joint visit to the Archive and Braintree District Museum:

It is possible to arrange for your class or year group to visit both sites. At the museum you would have the opportunity to look more in-depth at the historical importance of Braintree and the surrounding area in textile manufacture, examine a loom and have, if you wish, a session on ‘materials’.

We strongly advise year groups to visit both venues, as the Archive cannot comfortably accommodate more that one class at a time. By visiting both sites the children’s appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of textiles will be enhanced.

The Learning for Life Centre at the Museum may be reserved for eating packed lunches if a hands-on session has been booked.

Charges for joint visit: please contact the Archive.
